New textile exhibition celebrates creativity and community in Lisburn
A new exhibition at the Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum explores how textile art can bring people together through creativity, storytelling and shared skills.
‘Honouring Brokenness’, by The Golden Thread Group, opened on Saturday 24 October and runs until 30 January 2027.
The all-Ireland collective was established in 2022 and brings together women with a shared passion for textiles and stitching. Members meet on both sides of the border, building friendships and sharing stories as they sew.
Their work celebrates the old, broken and discarded, exploring themes of restoration, renewal and transformation through traditional and contemporary textile techniques.
Officially opening the exhibition, Councillor Sharon Lowry, Chair of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Communities and Wellbeing Committee, highlighted Lisburn’s proud textile heritage and encouraged visitors to discover the stories behind the artwork.
The exhibition follows more than a year of collaboration between the museum, Professor Barbara Dass and The Golden Thread Group. During that time, members held meetings at the museum and explored its textile collections.
